Take a peek at Waking Up To Love---
Thanks for having me today, Anne, for an interview and a giveaway of Waking Up To Love.
Katie, who’s the first guy to make you swoon?
Oh my! That would be Big Mike, When I was maybe 19. He was a big rugged guy just back from Nam, and there was something dangerous under the gentle surface. Handsome as hell and a great kisser. Popular at the time was the song that went something like, “The first time ever I saw your face, I thought the sun rose in your eyes, and the moon and stars were the gifts you gave to the dark and endless sky.” Unforgettable.
Besides writing, what do you do to satisfy your creative side?
Photography makes my soul sing! I’ve always loved taking pictures, and the hobby took on a spiritual dimension after a couple of retreats with the theme “photography as meditation.” I’ve posted some pictures from a recent trip on my Facebook.

What’s your thinking about using a pseudonym?
Pen names serve many purposes! I’m now writing under my own name, but I started out publishing as “Katie O’Boyle.” At the time, I was still working in higher education (where genre fiction is frowned upon!) and I was publishing professionally, so I didn’t want colleagues googling my professional name for articles and coming up with my romance novels. When I cast around for a pen name, I thought of my beloved cousin Cathy Boyle who was such a romantic and such a good influence on my life growing up. She passed away as I was writing the first Lakeside Porches romance, and I think of that series as a tribute to her. I’ve kept the pseudonym for the romances I write.
What advice would you give to new writers?
Be true to your voice, and work hard to develop it! For me, the best move was joining a professional organization in my genre and taking advantage of the workshops, online chapters, critique opportunities, contest, and so on.
What genre or genres do you write?
I have a series of four contemporary romance books (Lakeside Porches) that explore aspects of alcoholism and recovery, published with Soulmate Publishing. My first and biggest love, though, is mystery, and I’m writing a series of traditional mysteries set in the same Finger Lakes city as the Lakseide Porches novels, Tompkins Falls.
What’s your current WIP?
I have two books in progress right now. One is a mystery, A Necessary Murder, the second in the Tompkins Falls Mystery series. I’m also writing a new romance series Harmony@Cady’s Point, about healing and hope. The heroine of the first Harmony book is the girlfriend of the man killed in A Necessary Murder. For me, there’s an intellectual side to murder, following the clues to find the murderer, and there’s also a fascinating human side that speaks to those who loved the victim, how they heal and move on from the tragedy.
I love reading mystery, especially following clues to figure out who did it!
Let’s have an excerpt from Waking Up To Love!
Lyssa fixed a mug of chamomile tea and carried it into the bedroom. Moonlight streamed through the French door. Hunkered nearby was the last packing box, the one marked ‘Miscellaneous.’
She folded back the flaps. Justin had said Kyle wanted to send some things she’d left behind at Pennington House. There, on top, were her hiking shoes, the ones she’d ruined on the cliff path when the squall interrupted her last cliff walk with him.
She lifted one shoe out of the box. The groundkeeper had cleaned and conditioned the leather. Sweet of him. She touched it all over, loving how soft and firm the leather was. The scrapes where she’d slid down the stone steps were just faint patches. The sole had not a trace of dirt or gravel or grass or salt spray.
She inhaled the smell of leather and shoe oil. And maybe a trace of rain off the Atlantic. And the scent left by Kyle’s strong square hands as he’d nestled the shoe in the box. She hugged the boot to her chest and let a few tears fall before reaching back into the box.
Just visible under its mate was a letter.
